The Chin

Consider the chin from two viewpoints: the side view and the frontal view. From the side, chins may protrude too much, not enough or be just right. As with many other features, men have more leaway with excessive protrusion, but neither sex has much wiggle room with underprojecting chins. When a chin needs to be augmented, any of a variety of sizes and shapes of chin implants are available. Using computer imaging, the patient and doctor can agree on the amount of additional projection desired. The projection chosen is likely to be slightly less for most women than it would be for most men.

chin pic 1This is a typical result from chin augmentation in a woman. The implant has tapering extensions which widen the chin slightly. Statistically, women have more pointed chins than men, but this does not mean that pointed chins are prettier. They are just more common.

chin 2This is an example of a very square, prominent and vertically tall chin. It is a good example of very masculine chin, but one that is overstated. Chin implants can be used to create this appearance if desired. In a male to female transgender patient, this type of chin should be softened by reshaping the bone to diminish squareness and height.

chin 3This photo of the same chin has been computer-altered to show more typical dimensions. Which of these two chins works better for a male is a matter of personal preference, but there is no question that the smaller, rounder chin is the only alternative for a female.

chin 4On the left is the typically female chin contour.

chin 5The chin in the middle photo is square, but its statistically less common contour does not in any way detract from this beautifu woman's appearance

chin 6This chin is clearly "too tall" to be ideal. It serves as a reminder, however, that not all features have to conform to gender ideals for a face to be considered attractive. Male to female transgender patients with a similar chin would be advised to consider diminishing its height.
